Memories

"Jani Allan with Charlton Heston at the Hyde Park Hotel in 1990 for a Sunday Times (UK) interview. “Mr Heston,” I said, “My friend Elaine and I have had a crush on you since we were 13.” “Where’s your friend Elaine,” was his wry response. During the lunch gabfest he told me that his life’s philosophy was based on Winston Churchill’s exhortation to never give up. He leaned towards me and in pure Churchillian metre he intoned “Never, never give up. Never, ever, ever, give up…” " width="423" height="600" /> Jani Allan with Charlton Heston at the Hyde Park Hotel in 1990 for a Sunday Times (UK) interview.“Mr Heston,” I said, “My friend Elaine and I have had a crush on you since we were 13.” “Where’s your friend Elaine,” was his wry response. The reason Janet became Jani was because Lesley Seller, the Fleet Street newspaper design guru designed the logo of my first column - Just Jani. He wanted to use three pictures but said that 'Janet' was too long. It wouldn't fit. He changed my name to Jani. Since April in 1980 Jani I have been. To amusement it is now practically mandatory to change your name from Shelley to Shelli, for Patty to Patti. Let the record show, there was no such fashion when Lesley designed the column.

  1. Kwaa!!!! “A fondness for headgear. EFF continues to champion the trend”
In one sentence, cut, sliced and diced to the heart of SA politics!
    Good to see some pics!

  2. Alan says:

    Hello Beautiful!

  3. George Cocolas says:

Dear Jani – Wow, you still look as ravishing as I remember. You were always so glamorous, and now, a few (many) years later, your unparalleled wit, kindness and wry appreciation of the absurdities of life simply shows that your glamour and appeal always came from within.
Darling, your circumstances may have changed, but you are still a major force to be reckoned with.
    love
    George
PS – Have you ever been told you look like Amanda Lear (joke! – Another Glamazon)

    • Jani Allan says:

Ah. You are too kind. I get a lot of ‘You look like Catherine Deneuve.’
But that is when they are a tad wasted. LOL. Love you for having the generosity and compassion to understand. You are an evolved soul. May your tribe increase. 🙂 Poss you can review an advance copy of the book?

    • Jani Allan says:

Yes! Once at Madam Jojo’s in London. LOL

  4. George Cocolas says:

    Dear Jani

I would absolutely LOVE to review your latest offering, and it would be the greatest honour. To my mind, you and Lyn Sampson are, by a huge margin, the best contemporary writers to come out of South Africa. I honestly believe that you should be regarded in the same camp as AA Gill. Fearless, acerbic and unapologetic. Yip – thats how I would classify my (hopefully) Jani. May I keep in touch with you Jani, and what would be the best medium. All my love. George
PS – I have a story about New Hope that you may find interesting – a kinda “Hopelessly trying to get laid in New Hope” anecdote.

  5. Roy G. says:

I love reading JA and always enjoyed her Sunday column before her world exploded way back when.

  6. Hans Meevis says:

Such lovely photo’s. I so liked reading your column and now I have the delight of reading your blog.
And still you are able to take current affairs in SA by the scruff of the neck .
    “Mewling” — exactly.
When your book comes out I shall happily pay whatever it costs, I care nothing for the price.
Power to you, beautiful lady, you are totally unique.

  7. marianne says:

Hi Jani – love it that you re still around and have not lost your wit and astute observations. what are you up to in the US?

  8. maggie says:

Beauty AND brains but not sure why the EFF features on your photo page ……. ???

  9. Anonymous says:

OMG, sex on legs. Love your album.

  10. Bernice says:

I am blown away by the strong face you have. Your cheekbones and eyes , I find absolutely gorgeous! Beauty and Brains , who said you can’t have them both?

  11. Jani
I want to reconnect with you, your book has filled in blanks for me..we left South Africa in 1997 and lost all knowledge of you. What a life. what a talent. I will drive to Lambertville to find you if I can. Look out Lambertville . I am coming to find the long lost Jani Allan we knew at Wits.
    Maxine

  12. Jeremy Swanson says:

Who does not remember getting a dose of pure truth from Jani Allan on a Sunday?
